Chic Teak Launch New Style Imperial Bench

Basingstoke, United Kingdom (4th December, 2013) – Chic Teak, a leading supplier of outdoor garden furniture, has just launched a new style of Imperial garden bench.

Chic Teak have supplied an ornate Imperial style bench adorned with traditional Indonesian carvings for many years. It was particularly distinctive as unlike other teak benches it was made from reclaimed timber making every single bench unique.

Now it is available with grade A heartwood teak for the more discerning customer who likes their benches to be less rustic. The carvings themselves are still crafted by hand following traditional Indonesian patterns this means each bench may differ in carved elements but the bench is intrinsically the same high quality.

A bench made from  reclaimed timber has a charm of its own buy due to their very nature can vary in quality. These new Imperial benches made from heartwood remove the quality uncertainty by becoming of the same high standard of the other benches.

Ironically once these charming benches have weathered outside the teak turns a rich and warm grey making them almost indistinguishable from their reclaimed teak counterparts. But under closer scrutiny a trained eye can spot the difference and the quality of the heartwood teak becomes apparent.

The new Imperial bench will be available in 3 popular sizes;  2 seater 130cm, 3 seater 150cm and 4 seater 180cm.  A matching Imperial chair is also available as a substantial carver with two solid arms making it a perfect lounge chair. Used alongside the Imperial bench and a coffee table they make a charming lounge set perfect for any sized garden.

Both the Imperial bench and chair are available to view at the Chic Teak offices and are available from stock.

Chic Teak Managing Partner Robert Bowden commented: “We like to listen to our customers and are please we have been able to source a Imperial bench using Grade A heartwood teak.”

Chic Teak Add Bamboo Parasols to Range

Basingstoke, United Kingdom (01 September, 2013) – Chic Teak, a leading supplier of outdoor garden furniture, Is introducing a range of robust bamboo parasols, ideal for use with their teak furniture in both commercial and domestic gardens.

Parasols for outdoor garden furniture have always been a difficult product to stock, sell and support for many reasons. For one the quality can vary tremendously and for two, unlike the teak garden furniture, parasols have inherently required care and attention.

Parasols are either handled poorly, left open during inappropriate windy weather or simply left out for months on end without any form of maintenance.

This was a dilemma for Chic teak who always liked to supply a complete garden furniture set which often included a parasol. But unlike the furniture the parasol has been known to let down the set and lead to disappointment if not looked after correctly.

Now Chic Teak have addressed these key issues by introducing a range of tough bamboo parasols that are designed to withstand the worst of UK weather and compliment their range of teak square, round and rectangular dining tables.

Bamboo itself is a notoriously strong and flexible wood, often used for scaffolding in areas such as Indonesia and China. The bamboo itself is ideal as a parasol pole as unlike hardwood or teak it is much more flexible and tends to bend in extreme wind rather than break.

The bamboo parasols are made from a single-piece pole for extra strength and durability. Their double pulley and rope system ensures easy raising and lowering of the parasol, even on the the largest models. The Levante range also incorporates a turned bamboo hub and runner with stainless steel brackets, a bamboo finial, and an elegant practical hour glass shaped pin made from bamboo and stainless steel. The canopies themselves are made from tough wearing polyester or a fade resistant Spuncrylic (depending on colour choice)

Available in round, square and rectangular formats in a variety of sizes from 2.5m to 4m in the round, 2.1 to3.4 in the square and 2x3m and 2.5x3.5m in the rectangular size.

Chic Teak Managing Partner, Robert Bowden, commented: “At last we can proudly supply a quality range of parasols for our teak garden furniture customers that matches the quality of the furniture and can withstand the changeable UK weather and regular use.”

For more information on the bamboo parasols or the Chic Teak garden furniture, visit their website at http://www.chic-teak.co.uk/ or telephone 0845 390 5000.

These beautiful teak garden chairs have a formal Edwardian look about their style with an ornate and comfortable curved back and rounded seat. The ornate carving on the back rungs is duplicated on both the front legs and under the seat which gives these smart chairs a delightful regal look.

Classic in design and yet incorporating some modern twists these teak garden chairs will be stocked in both diner and carver formats and will look splendid under any of our dining tables wether they be square, rectangular, oval or round.

Made from high quality A grade teak these elegant dining chairs have been manufactured to the same high standards as our other chairs and tables. Requiring minimal maintenance, if cared for, these dining chairs can last a lifetime and provide endless hours of outdoor entertainment.

Chic Teak Order New Bar Chairs Based on Popular Club Design

Basingstoke, United Kingdom (27 July, 2013) – Chic Teak, a leading supplier of outdoor garden furniture, orders a carver version of their best selling Club Bar Chair in readiness for next years summer.

Over five years ago Chic Teak introduced a teak garden dinning chair that quickly became one of its best sellers. It’s popularity was largely due to its shapely design with its distinctive curved seat and back. The smooth and shaped slats are perfect for all manner of diners and made the chair supremely comfortable with or without a cushions.

The chair was a terrific compromise between a heavy weight dining chair and a lighter chair. Heavy weight  robust chairs are popular in environments where they get heavier than usual use but are less easy to move about. The Cub chair is the best of both worlds in that it is middle weight and yet looks very ornate which explains why it has been popular with clubs, restaurants and bars.

So after the club designs success  Chic teak designed a similar bench and a bar chair or stool. Now following customer request Chic Teak have ordered a similar Club bar chair but with arms as found on its Club carver.

Made from high quality heartwood teak and made in the traditional way by true craftsmen using mortice and tenon joinery these bar chairs will make any bar or pool side look very inviting next summer.

The new Chic Teak Club bar chair with arms will be available as a stock line for 2014 but can be pre-ordered for delivery in time for the summer.

Chic Teak Managing Partner, Robert Bowden, commented: “The Club range has been one of my personal favourites not just because of its comfort but due to its suitability for so many dining and garden applications I am sure the Club bar chair will be equally popular.

For more information on the new teak Club bar chair or any of Chic Teak garden furniture ranges, visit their website at http://www.chic-teak.co.uk/ or telephone 0845 390 5000.

Chic Teak Launch New Router Service

Basingstoke, United Kingdom (25th June, 2013) – Chic Teak, a leading supplier of outdoor garden furniture, has recently purchased a professional state of the art router so it can offer a in-house intricate carving service.
Chic Teak are pleased to announce that they can now offer the facility to beautifully engrave benches and plaques with sophisticated and intricate patterns from letters to logos.

Following the routers recent acquisition and subsequent training for its highly skilled operator Chic Teak can now offer a reliable and precise service in which almost anything can be carved into the wood using the sophisticated computer controlled device.

The chosen design and or typeface is fed  or scanned into the machine and programmed with the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) for the utmost precision. A variety of heads also allow the work to be very intricate and provides a great advantage over hand craved lettering.

Recent customer projects have included benches with wonderful ornate lettering in upper and lower case as well an intricate company logo.

Chic Teak Managing Partner Robert Bowden commented: “We have offered hand carved lettering for many years as part of our memorial and commemorative bench service and it is still a popular method for traditionalist. Yet this new router will enable us to add logos, customer designs and a variety of typefaces which previously were not possible or practical to carve with the human hand. This wonderful device really has enabled us to offer a bespoke service and will allow us to offer almost endless opportunities to create unique products for our customers.”

Once provided with a design or a brief of the customer requirements the work can be carried out very quickly and offers tremendous value for money compared with more traditional methods which can be labour intensive. The only current limitation of this new router service is that the the machine can only work on benches that are flat-packed or can be easily disassembled. When this is not possible a plaque can be carved with the router separately and affixed to the item before delivery.

Chic Teak  strive to offer the very best in high quality teak garden furniture and now with this routing service can provide an extra facet to its bespoke services.

Chic Teak provides unique dining table for the gardens of the renovated gastro Pub in Kintbury, West Berkshires

Basingstoke, United Kingdom (12th May, 2013) –  A leading supplier of outdoor garden furniture, Chic Teak marked its introduction into bespoke medieval styled dinning tables with a recent sale to a new gastro pub in West Berkshire.

The heavy 3.4 metre dining table table made from old reclaimed timbers of teak twill accommodate nearly twenty diners and will make an impressive centre piece for the large canal side garden. Chic Teak launch new range of weathered teak tree roots

Basingstoke, United Kingdom (28th March, 2013) –  Following a recent procurement trip to Indonesia Chic Teak a leading supplier of outdoor garden furniture, has recently introduced a new range of weathered tree roots.  Chic Teak who have traditionally supplied teak garden furniture such as benches, dining tables and chairs are delighted to expand their teak products with these stylish teak sculptures.

Raw and untreated, these wizen and twisted roots are excavated by hand from harvested plantations in-preparation for new plants. Historically the wood was cleared and destroyed but has recently proved popular as a modern form of display piece that looks just as fitting inside or out.

These visually stunning teak sculptures are available in 4 sizes ranging from small which is approximately 20x150x160 cms to extra large large which are around 150x170x2000 cms. Each root is securely mounted on a teak block base which can be free standing,  buried into the ground if outside or integrated into a more elaborate display installation.

Not only are these weathered teak roots truly beautiful and show nature at its best their use helps the Indonesian plantations themselves by funding an otherwise expensive removal process allowing the land to be replanted for future generations.

Since introducing a range of Objet d’art which includes  these teak root sculptures, teak leaf sculptures and indoor and outdoor bronzes Chic teak has broadened its trade base from the landscape designers to interior designers who have been using both the teak roots and teak leafs to dramatic effect in the reception areas of businesses and hotels in London and other major cities in the UK.

Each tree root is unique having been taken from individual trees and can make a very interesting display if fixed within a garden boarder or or lit with some dramatic lighting. Not only are the root shapes themselves very appealing the shadows that they cast can create a considerable statement. Plus as they are made from natural wood they will last a lifetime and require no maintenance.

Since being on display many customers visiting Chic Teak see many different things within their distinctive shapes from weird to the bizarre but whatever people see within the twisted and gnarled wood everyone seems to agree they make delightful sculptures and add a natural peaceful quality to almost any environment.

Chic Teak Managing Partner, Robert Bowden, commented: “It may be different from our usual stock but we are delighted to support our Indonesia suppliers by helping them fund the replanting of their plantations by utilising what was previously considered a waste teak product and at the same provide an interesting focal point in both gardens and buildings.“

The Cube is a visually stunning piece of garden furniture carefully made from smooth shaped slats of teak to give an unusual and distinctive look to this robust and striking set. The name, The Cube, is derived from each beautiful piece having a square shaped end wether it be a table, bench or stool.

A 200cm (4 seater) or 100cm bench (2 seater) and a single seater stool. The cube is available as a mix and match set or can be ordered individually. Each piece is superbly crafted and of heavy weight.

Claudio Bartels is now recognised as one of the leading Indonesian teak garden furniture designers and his designs can be seen worldwide in leading hotels, entertainment institutions as well as private villas and gardens.

Chic Teak launch launch new range of teak bench security fixing kits

Basingstoke, United Kingdom (14th March, 2013) – Chic Teak a leading supplier of outdoor garden furniture, has recently introduced a new range of easy to fix security devices for use with their teak garden benches.

Securing a teak bench to the ground easily and neatly has up until recently been a formidable challenge. Some set the legs of the bench in concrete or chain them to another object but in the past neither method has been very secure or sightly.

The new range of Chic Teak security kits have been specially designed for their range of commemorative benches and puts a stop to these prized benches being moved and stolen. Two kits are available, the Earth security fixing kit and the Concrete security fixing kit and are deployed dependant on the ground surface to which they are intended to rest. Both kits contain a security bracket that affixes to two opposing legs of the bench via a self shearing bolt. The security brackets are then attached to a 12” long iron screw that is driven into the ground for grass or soil installations. Or in the case of benches that are to rest on hard concrete the security bracket is attached to a special bolt that is screwed into the concrete.
Once installed correctly the only way the bench can then be moved is by cutting through the bolts with a hacksaw. This means the benches are safe and secure from misuse or being stolen from even the most determined thief.

It is a shame that such security measures are necessary but after investing in a quality bench and going to the trouble of having it personalised with a plaque or a carved inscription it is sound sense to protect it from damage or theft especially when the benches themselves can last up to 25 years.

Both kits contain everything that is required for quick and easy installation. including brackets, bolts, screws and a drill bit. All that is required are the tools for fixing which are a spanner and an electric drill.
Commemorative and memorial benches are those in most need as they are often installed in public places such as church ground, schools, golf clubs and in areas of natural beauty. The robust Raffles bench and Riverbank bench are very popular benches for use by the general public but can lead to considerable distress to the buyer if damaged or stolen.

Chic Teak Managing Partner, Robert Bowden, commented: “In an ideal world it would not be necessary to deploy such security measures but for the sake of a few pounds these bench security kits not only safeguard any investment but also avoid any emotional upset if a teak bench that is dedicated to a loved one is damaged or stolen.“

Chic Teak Helps Professor R J ‘Bill’ Heald Celebrate his CBE Honour by Engraving a Teak Bench

Basingstoke, United Kingdom (15thFebruary, 2013) –  Chic teak was recently commissioned to supply a teak 4 seater Riverbank bench for the garden of Professor R J ‘Bill’ Heald. The sturdy teak bench was given to him by his proud wife and family in recognition for receiving a CBE in 2012.

The 180cm bench was handsomely hand-carved with his name and the 7th November which was the date he was honoured by the Queen at Buckingham Palace with a CBE for services to British Surgery abroad.

Richard John Heald, known to everyone as Bill, received his medical education at Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge and Guy’s Hospital Medical School in London.  He has spent his surgical consultant life at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital as a colorectal surgeon and in doing so has become the world authority on surgery for rectal cancer.

In 1982 he developed and described a new technique of resecting rectal cancers, which he called Total Mesorectal Excision (TME).  This technique has been refined to reduce the incidence of local recurrence of rectal cancer.  Alongside the major improvement in the quality of life of patients with rectal cancer has been an increase in the long-term survival of these patients, and a massive reduction in those requiring long-term colostomy.

He has operating privileges in more than 40 counties and has performed over 400 TV based live operative demonstrations in more than 40 countries.  He runs regular masterclasses in five European cities and has contributed to 33 other international masterclasses across five continents.

Bill has been instrumental in creating the Pelican Cancer Foundation at Basingstoke Hospital, which has been innovative in teaching the multidisciplinary management of rectal cancer.  In October 2012 he was invited by the American College of Surgeons to present the Centenary Cancer Commission Lecture at the American College.  Later this year he will receive their Honorary Fellowship in Washington.  He has served the Royal College of Surgeons as a Vice-President and has received an OBE, followed by a CBE, for services to British Surgery abroad

Chic Teak Managing Partner, Robert Bowden, commented: “The Heald family have been very supportive of Chic Teak and their local Basingstoke community over the years and we are delighted to be chosen to help his family celebrate his recent CBE.“

Chic Teak Planters at The Princess Beatrice Garden at Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight Continue to look Spectacular

Basingstoke, United Kingdom (6th February, 2013) –  A collection of ten 85cm teak planters supplied by a leading supplier of outdoor garden furniture, Chic Teak, that were installed in the Princess Beatrice garden at Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight in 2009 at the start of the overhaul continue to look magnificent now that the work is finally complete.

The decorative but robust teak planters take up pride of position within the pretty Edwardian-style garden that was designed by the award winning U.K. gardener Chris Beardshaw, who is perhaps best known for his work on the BBC's long-running television series, Gardeners' World.

The charming garden which was once the private retreat of Queen Victoria’s daughter was given a complete overhaul in 2009 as part of a series of improvements and renovations done to the popular tourist attraction to attract a wider range of visitor.

The garden is a collaboration between the English Heritage, who maintain Carisbrooke Castle on behalf of the nation and garden designer Chris Beardshaw. The garden is considered to be the crowning glory of the castles improvements which also included a family interactive display, imaginative presentations, a virtual tour and  a new building that houses the admission point and shop.
The design of the garden, which generally follows a geometric pattern, incorporates many elements from gardens that were fashionable from the Edwardian period such as herbaceous plants, small fruit trees, water features and even the large teak planters.

Originally teak planters were used in garden to hold plants, shrubs and small trees that struggled to survive the U.K. harsh winter weather and were moved into a green or hot house until they could be moved back into the garden in the spring. Nowadays of course the teak planter with their distinctive finials have a wider use and are used primarily for decorative purposes.

Chic Teak Managing Partner, Robert Bowden, commented: “We are always delighted to supply teak garden furniture including garden benches and planters  to the English Heritage especially when we know it will be enjoyed by so many visitors. Our teak planters are designed to last and the installation at the Castle is a testament to their durability and high quality. “

Chic Teak Welcomes FLEGT Action Plan to Prevent Illegal Logging

Basingstoke, United Kingdom (27th January, 2013) –  Chic Teak, a leading supplier of outdoor teak garden furniture welcomes the forthcoming EU Timber Regulation that will prohibit the placing of illegally produced wood products on the European Market from 3rd March 2013.

The European Union was so concerned about the serious, economic and social consequences of illegal logging they published the The Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Action Plan in 2003.

The Action Plan sets out a range of measures available to the EU and its Member States to tackle illegal logging in the world’s forests and encourage long-term sustainable forest management. These measures will prevent the illegal import of wood into the EU, improve the supply of legal timber and help increase the demand for wood coming from responsibly managed forests.

Chic Teak has always sourced its teak garden furniture, including dining tables, chairs and benches from Indonesian government controlled plantations but no legislation had previously existed to prevent unscrupulous loggers and manufacturers from exploiting the market to the detriment of their local forests. This means the new action is incredibly good news for the industry, legitimate traders, local people and the environment.  Other wood product suppliers in the EU may have been less honourable in the past and unwittingly been purchasing teak products from unscrupulous suppliers. Their actions created profitable markets for illegal loggers, and have undermined the efforts to enforce forest law in many of the wood-exporting countries.

Under this new FLEGT Action plan, countries such as Indonesia, who wish to place timber in the EU must enter into a bilateral FLEGT Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) with the EU. Under its regulations wood suppliers must obtain a licence from their local government to verify the legality of their timber exported to the EU whilst unlicensed products will be denied entry.

Chic Teak suppliers are currently going through the licence approval process to ensure that they comply with the terms as laid out in the FLEGT Action Plan and every container of wooden products that leave the country is approved.

Chic Teak Managing partner, Robert Bowden commented: “We are delighted that the EU is taking this tough action against illegal logging and making it difficult for a manufacturer to supply teak furniture using illegally logged wood. Now our customers can be assured that we only supply furniture from producers that comply with EU Timber Regulations, local Indonesian law and act responsibly towards local people and the environment.

Basingstoke, United Kingdom (12th September, 2012) – Chic Teak, a leading supplier of outdoor garden furniture, have been commissioned by the Middlesex County Cricket Club to supply a commemorative bench to former English Cricket Captain Andrew Strauss to celebrate his 100 test appearances.

Andrew Straus who has played for Middlesex CCC for his entire career also skippered his country in 50 of his 100 tests. His last test was against South Africa at Lords on the 16th August.

Angus Fraser Middlesex CCC MD of Cricket knew of Chic Teak as the bench supplier to Lords and asked if they could supply and carve a similar bench to celebrate Andrew Strauss and his illustrious career.

Strauss was England's third-most experienced captain and the second-most successful behind Michael Vaughan, with a record of 24 wins from his 50 matches at the helm.  He also led the side to home and away Ashes triumphs during a run of victories that saw them crowned as the world's number one team for the first time since the rankings were introduced.

The large 240cm, 6 seater Riverbank bench was intricately hand-carved with over 200 characters covering details of the numerous tests in which he skippered including Pakistan, South Africa, West Indies, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Australia, Bangladesh and India.

Chic Teak Managing Partner, Robert Bowden, commented: “ The bench took nearly 50 hours to hand-carve and gloriously depicts the tests he skippered and represents a wonderful chronological record of his career which we hope will take pride of place in his garden for many years.”

December 2012

Chic Teak Unveil Commemorative Philip Larkin Bench unveiled at Hull Paragon Station

Basingstoke, United Kingdom (19th December, 2012) –  A 125cm round tree bench supplied by a leading supplier of outdoor garden furniture, Chic Teak, was recently unveiled at Hull Paragon Station by the Philip Larkin Society.

The bench, inscribed with ‘All sense of being in a hurry gone’ was unveiled on the 2nd December by The Lord Lieutenant of the County, Hon. Mrs Susan Cunliffe-Lister in a ceremony attended by over 60 guests. During the ceremony an introductory speech was made by the Lord Major of Hull and the first verse from his poem Whitsun Weddings was read by Hon Susan Cunliffe-Lister.

The poem, one of Larkins’ most popular describes a Whitsun train departing for London and Wedding couples joining the train. ‘All sense of being in a hurry gone’ is a reference to being able to sit and relax before boarding  a train.

Over recent years the Philip Larkin Society has commemorated the English poet and novelists on the anniversary of his death. In 2010 the ‘Martin Jennings’ statue was erected and in 2011, five roundels with poetry inscriptions were installed, all of which are also in the Hull Paragon Station.

The Lord Mayor of Hull, Daniel Brown commented: “The bench will be another enhancement to a wonderful station and another recognition of the link between the poet and one of his favourite places in Hull.”

In his thank you speech Professor Edwin Dawes, Chairman of the Philip Larkin Society  suggested an indirect link through the makers of the bench– Chic-Teak, who have made similar benches for Lord’s Cricket Ground, home of the elite Marylebone Cricket Club, the MCC, of which body Philip Larkin was a proud member, and loved to wear their tie.  He had been elected to membership in 1974, proposed by his friends Harold Pinter and Ansell Egerton, and thereafter every August it became a ritual to attend the Test or Varsity match.
The ceremony itself wasn’t without its own drama after the storeroom in which the teak bench was kept for security, couldn’t be unlocked. Fortunately Railway staff did eventually access the room and the time lost was made up as the bench itself was quickly and easily assembled.

After the unveiling the guests attended a special luncheon in the adjoining Royal Hotel, the stations hotel.
The Statue, Roundels and now the teak Bench are a firm feature, along with Larkin Trail, on the tourist map of the area.
